Salon is evoking the opulence of seventeenth century Europe rather than the minimalism of a contemporary gallery or of an Asian landscape. Yet, upon closer examination many of the frames are made from inexpensive materials such as plastic or wood and are likely manufactured in Asian countries. I have been collecting these frames from local thrift stores. As I create the pieces I reflect on the often short-lived trends in interior decoration as well as the histories of these abandoned frames—likely once containers of intimate family portraits. The deliberate flatness of the ink drawings themselves, the use of ink and the East Asian facial features of the subjects connect the works to the history of Asian art.
